E victory day for a veteran

Even after over thirty years of playing Scrabble competitively, Frans Farrugia (shown in photo) never fails to surprise with his enduring knack for the game. He did this again recently when he won six games out of seven to crown himself champion in the Il-Vitorja One-Day Tournament, leavning behind him a trail of equally experienced and competent players like Josephine Mayo, who was runner-up, and third-placed Mario Seychell, who also played the highest non-bingo of the day (see word of the month to the right). Another veteran, Alfred Xuereb, surpassed expectatations to win the Ratings Prize.

Farrugia's feat propels him to a place among the top ten Scrabble players on the island, thus seasoning the man's remarkable playing longevity with a dash of victory and success.
