he Malta Scrabble Club
The Malta Scrabble Club will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2009. It was way back in May 1984 that two young ladies by the name of Angele Borg and Catherine Patiniott founded the Club. Angele Andrews (nee Borg) became the first Club President and the Club has never looked back since then.
The National League is played normally between January and May and is obviously considered as the most important event in the Club’s calendar. Other important tournaments include the Summer Tournament, held between June and September, and the Autumn Tournament, held between October and December. The Club organizes also a number of One Day Tournaments, which are open to both members and non-members.
This year the Club organized successfully for the first time an International Open Tournament in May. It is hoped that this Tournament becomes an annual event.
The Club has been represented in every World Scrabble Championship held since its first edition in 1991 in London. Seven players have represented the Club in these Championships. Peter Elbourne took part in the first six editions, while David Delicata took part in three editions. The other Maltese representatives were Mario Saliba, Owen Bondin, Kevin Abela, Theresa Camilleri and Jojo Delia.
Eight players, six male and two female, have managed to win the National Championships. Peter Elbourne won it seven times, David Delicata five times, Mario Saliba and Theresa Camilleri three times each. The Club’s first champion was Godfrey Magri Demajo in 1985.
